Big Sur

Posted by Tim

It was very overcast in the morning and I was initially thinking rain.  I took off slowly down the coast around 9 am and headed toward San Simeon.  Last night was a little rough as the hotel had paper thin walls and my neighbors had bad ears.  The tv was blasting and they even had their window open in case I couldn't hear it through the wall.  The other side got up around 6:30 and proceeded to bang every imaginable item in their room.  What the f@!$?

I made my way along the coast and the sun began to burn through the clouds.  I saw several bikers with panniers and accessories pedaling along the PCH. I still wonder how close the cars get to them.  Some people just don't care and buzz right by like you are in their way.  I talked to a guy stopped on his bike at an overlook and he said the cars had been great, giving him lots of space.  Keep riding.

Better than the crazy guys in Utah.

I'm sure you have seen the scene below but it bears to be repeated.

I've been to the Hearst Castle several times and taken all the tours but every time I'm in the area I go back.  The story and passion of Randolph Hearst never ceases to amaze me.  He spent 27 years building the castle and he still wasn't done.  A little OCD I might say but we'll call it passion.  Everything really is about interpretation.  I took tour 3 which now runs $24.95.  It seems like it used to be around $15.  Everything is going up.  It's a great tour and well worth it.  I also saw the movie about the castle.

The pool has got to be the most popular part.  If one volunteers 50 hours in one year they get to go swimming in the pool at a special event.  For 200 hours they can bring a few friends.

Look at the detail of the tile work.  No expense was spared.

His style in decorating is quite classical but I'm sure it represented the best of the time.  I started thinking about whose home we would be touring in 60-70 years that is a big mogul today.  It's amazing to think that in that amount of time that which is stylish and modern today will look outdated and possibly gaudy in the future.  Maybe Bill Gate's home or Oprah's house will be on display to the public.  I don't really know what house is truly amazing in this day and age.

I'm staying in another Motel 6.  This time just south of Santa Barbara.  I hope to go climbing the mountains in the distance in the morning as it's time to peel the bike out of my trunk and get going again.  Should be a great ride.
